Eco Villages Australia was founded in 2018 by Claire Ogden and Andrew McLean and the first eco-village property site was purchased in 2019 in Maleny, Queensland.
We currently have a small group of permanent residents at Maleny Eco Village and a broader group of volunteers who come to monthly workdays and stay for 1-3 weeks through the ‘Work Away’ program. In the future, we hope people will be inspired to start their own eco-village community under the EVA non-profit organization.
All land and buildings are owned collectively by the non-profit organization and those who live here and all volunteers are stewards of the land, giving and receiving from the land but not owning the land. This is a radical departure from societal norms in Australia and we hope that our model of collective stewardship will allow people to think differently about land ownership, wealth, security, and community.
We operate using a gift economy model where we determine together what is sustainable for individuals to contribute and what is sustainable to create the eco-village of our dreams.
